Volunteering - Get Involved


There are many opportunities to spend time working as a volunteer at Jamyang, from a couple of hours to three months in our hospitality team. We are happy to offer the chance for enthusiastic people to work for the dharma in an exciting central London location. Volunteer Helpers Always Needed At Jamyang!

Here at Jamyang, there are always one-off projects on our wish list, but due to our current workload, staff cannot accomplish these “extra wishes”.

We are looking for volunteers who feel connected to any of the tasks below and who have time and skills to help us actualize these projects.

1. Task: Create a display board showing the history of the Old Courthouse, with photos.  (Samye Dzong has an beautiful display board showing the history of their Old Bath House building – creating a similar board would be excellent).

Skills Required: Some artistic sense of display of material, researching history of our Old Courthouse (we have a lot of written material and some photos already), getting text and photos ready for print, researching printing options and prices, organizing for the board to be properly hung.

2. Task: Cataloging our Library.  A lot of work was done recently to catalogue our Library books, but for various reasons, the catalogue is not available.  Our eventual wish is to have the catalogue accessible online for.  Plus a hard copy on site for people to refer to. people to access

We really need a person who is passionate about books to oversee the Library and its activities in general.

Skills Required: Sincere interest in Buddhist books.  Some prior knowledge of Library cataloguing necessary, computer skills to input data,

Ability to hold an overview of the Library and it’s role and function within Jamyang, both onsite and via the internet.

3. Task: Researching second hand scaffolding towers for Jamyang, particularly on eBay.  Researching what is a good price for our needs, keeping an eye on ebay over a period of time, bidding for appropriate scaffolding tower when available, arranging delivery.  (We need a high scaffolding tower for improvements to the outside front of the building particularly, but also for use in the gompa in future.

Skills Required: Good knowledge of researching on the internet.  Knowing exactly what Jamyang’s scaffolding needs are. If second hand tower, making sure it is sound and complete.  Following through with bidding, arranging delivery and storage at Jamyang etc. 

4. Task: Display Notice Board for Front of Jamyang’s Building, showing activities at the Centre.  Needs research of display boards, pricing, whether glass fronted or plastic fronted, how big, what kind of structure, how to mount it outside the building etc.

Skills Required: Some artistic sense of display. Web research ability to find good product at good price, arrange making and delivery.  Ability to produce attractive visual information about Jamyang itself, and our programme and special events in a way that it can be easily updated as events change.

5.  Task: Gardening needs at Jamyang.  Knowledge of appropriate plants to use, researching purchasing plants, planting them, maintaining them or overseeing maintenance of gardens. Need to liaise with person currently involved with garden. 

Skills Required: Knowledge of plants and their requirements.  Some awareness of garden design.  Able to buy soil and plants (preferably having use of a car or van for this).  Long term vision of the garden.

6.   Task: Sanding down and repainting the garden tables in our Courtyard ready for Cafe use over summer.

Skills Required: Ability to sand and prepare surface for painting, putting on a primer coat and then top coats of paint.  Approximately 6-8 tables to be painted.




3 Month Programme

Hospitality Team


Karma Yoga Programme participants are vital to Jamyang, and make up the core of the residential community. In return for a room in Jamyang, food and a £40 per week stipend, team members participate full-time to help with the main tasks of reception and keeping the building looking welcoming for visitors. Team members get two days off a week and stay for a period of three months.


Kitchen Yogi

We also have two kitchen yogis volunteering for 3 months at a time, in our in-house Cafe.

To apply for the Karma Yoga Programme or Kitchen Yogi position, we ask people to send an A4 sized short essay detailing why you would like to be at Jamyang, what you have to offer and when you would be available. We would then seek to interview you, preferably in person, but we can do it over the phone if this is not possible. If successful, we would follow up with two referees before offering you the position.

Programme for carers*

Vacancies for people who would like to experience the taste of compassion in action — we need additional practical help for our ongoing programme of daytime events for carers — we would like to build up a bank of people willing to offer some of their time to this project. You will most likely need to be available during the daytime and resident in London.
