Garden

Thanks to our keen and efficient volunteer gardener, Ros Williams, Jamyang's Courtyard and the front of our building, are looking green and luxuriant these days.  Ros spends many hours tending and watering our gardens so they bring immense pleasure to everyone coming to Jamyang.  Huge thanks to you Ros!

An example of how lovely the Courtyard is these days, was validated by Jamyang winning the August 2010 Conservation Foundation's prize for the best "Sacred Space" in London, and then Jamyang's entry winning the overall prize for the best Sacred Space of the year 2010!

The award is called "London Green Corners Award - For brightening London and enriching the biodiversity".

Repaying the Kindness sets out to nurture and support carers who live in the community and who are themselves so kind to others.

Who we are

Repaying the Kindness is Jamyang's nonreligious sister organisation, and is registered as a charity under the name 'Courthouse Community Centre'. We receive funding from the London Borough of Southwark, The City Bridge Trust and Triangle Trust to offer our service to Lambeth and Southwark Carers.

Based at Jamyang, our small team is supported by a growing body of volunteer helpers.

We aspire to:

    * offer carers respite in a day.

    * provide life-enhancing experiences for carers in a day

    * support carers in ways that strengthen their sense of wellbeing and help to reduce stress levels through a range of activities

Our programme offers:

    * respite in a day free from caring responsibilities, for adult carers living locally

    * an opportunity to experience activities such as Tai Chi, crafts, music & relaxation techniques, to socialise or to sit quietly and just be, in the peaceful, supportive environment of The Old Courthouse

    * seasonal outings to places of beauty and interest in the locality

    * delicious and healthy vegetarian food

Dying Well

Tibetan Buddhism has a vast range of practices to help us understand death and deal with it when it becomes part of our lives, either the deaths of our family members, or loved ones, or strangers, or animals we encounter, and of course, ultimately, our own. Dying Well and helping others die well are two of the most important things we can do in life, and far from being morbid, understanding death, the death process and what we can do is fascinating and liberating. The project is a chance to see what can be done, and to become part of a group that is developing at Jamyang as support to the community.

EMERGENCY CARD

This service iscurrently only available for subscribed friends of Jamyang.

If you carry one of our new Emergency Cards and you are unfortunate enough to be killed, seriously injured or have a life-threatening illness, the finder of the card can contact Jamyang and we can do various spiritual practices to help you through this critical time. Your name would be immediately added to the dedication board and read out at the Friday lunchtime puja and the merits dedicated to you. We also hope to have a list of people who would be willing to say a prayer at home; Geshe Tashi has recommended "The Prayer to be Reborn in the Land of Bliss" by Lama Tsong Khapa, together with other practices which will be available soon.

If you would like to apply for the card please download this form (PDF), print, complete it and return to Jamyang with a stamped address envelope.

If you are one of the few people who already have a card but have not completed a form, would you please let the office know so that you can be registered for the scheme.

THE DYING WELL FILES

These are now available in the Jamyang Office for consultation in the Centre. They include spiritual and practical information to help us at and around the time of death and include various prayers and practices, advice from Lama Zopa, details of Buddhist funerals, woodland burials, where to get an environmentally friendly coffin, hospices etc. etc.

There is also, thanks to the kindness of RIGPA, an excellent article which contains much valuable information. Did you know that you can arrange a funeral yourself without engaging, at considerable cost, the services of a funeral director - and how to go about it? Do you know your legal rights regarding the disposal of bodies? You can find the answers to these and many other questions. These files are a work-in-progress which will be added to from time to time. We do hope you will find them useful.

RESOURCES

We are happy to introduce three additions to the Dying Well Files.

Two FPMT books: Advice and Practices for Death & Dying for the Benefit of Self & Others and Practicing the Five Powers Near the Time of Death.

Also some copies of a Liberation Card for a dying person.

This beautiful 8" x 10"colour laminated card includes images and mantras that merely by seeing help a dying person to purify negative karma and be led to enlightenment. The front pictures 10 mantras and 10 images all especially chosen to benefit someone at the time of death. On the back of the card is a moving letter by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to assist the dying person at this most critical time.

These cards are available for loan in time of need, but should be returned to Jamyang so other people can use them. The books are for use in the Centre. We hope these items will be useful.

If you would like to purchase any of the above you can do online at  the Foundation Store:www.fpmt.org/shop

Mindfulness based stress reduction, or MBSR, is structured course that teaches participants how to practice mindfulness through simple meditation and yoga practices. Developed over the past 30 years, courses teaching mindfulness have been extensively researched and found to have helped many people deal with a wide range of difficulties from chronic pain to mental distress. It also offers a way of developing positive mental qualities and mental wellbeing.

Mindfulness has been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to help prevent relapse in depression. It is taught in a non-religious format and does not require belief in any spiritual tradition. The programme consists of one orientation session followed by eight two hour sessions in consecutive weeks. You will learn the skill of mindfulness using experiential exercises and gentle yoga movements alongside a variety of mindful meditations. This will be supported through teaching and group discussion.

Participants will be encouraged to develop their own daily mindfulness practice and will be given a practice to do at home 6 out of 7 days, for approximately 45 minutes per day. You will be provided with audio CDs and a workbook. In joining the course you will be making a commitment, as best you can, to attending all sessions and doing the daily home practice. Making time for this can, at times, feel stressful but we encourage you to work with these difficulties, they are an important part of your journey.

Please note: Participants need to commit to attending all sessions.
