Editor's Welcome
HHDL "I loved the teachings in Nottingham - we are so fortunate to be able to be with His Holiness!" a Jamyang student recently wrote in one of her emails. I think all of us who have been fortunate enough to attend teachings by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and other great teachers know how inspiring this experience can be, and how important for ones spiritual practice.  In this edition of Gentle Voice you will find several articles related to His Holiness' visit, including Lama Zopa Rinpoche's advice on supporting Tibet at this crucial time.

Related to this, we will be hosting a viewing of Joshua Dugdale's movie "The Unwinking Gaze", a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how His Holiness tries to keep the balance between his Buddhist vows and the realpolitik needed to placate China.

Also, speaking of great teachers, we have recently received confirmation of Khensur Lobsang Tenzin Rinpoche's visit to Jamyang London in the Autumn, so another great opportunity for Jamyang's students.

Don't forget this month we celebrate Saka Dawa with a day of precepts and group practices led by Geshe Tashi. We also host an Open Afternoon on the 14th of June and an Introduction to Buddhism on the 21-22 of June for those of you new to Jamyang or Buddhism who would like to come and learn more about what we offer at Jamyang.

Finally, don't miss Jamyang's walk next Sunday 15th.  It promises to be lots of fun and not too strenuous!

How Things Exist- teaching by Lama Zopa Rinpoche-
We have recently received copies of Lama Zopa's book How Things Exist, newly published by Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive.

LZR The ultimate goal of meditating, of practising Dharma, is to bring happiness to every sentient being. But not just the happiness of this life, which means physical and mental comfort, but, more importantly, long-term happiness - the happiness of all the coming future lives. In other words, our aim is to bring others happiness until they cut the relentless cycle of death and rebirth. Until we break the continuity of this suffering, we have to circle continuously, experiencing the suffering of rebirth and death again and again. How long does it take to be completely free from the cycle of death and rebirth? It depends on whether or not we meet the right path, whether or not we understand that path, and whether or not we practise it. And even if we practise the right path, how quickly we achieve liberation from the suffering cycle of death and rebirth depends on how skillfully we practice it.

Our goal is to lead sentient beings to long-term happiness, the happiness of future lives. A much more important goal than this is to bring them to ultimate happiness, to the complete end of all suffering and the causes of suffering. This ultimate happiness means that they never experience again the sufferings of rebirth, old age, sickness, death, or any other problem. So, bringing sentient beings this ultimate happiness of liberation is much more important than bringing them the happiness of future lives. But the happiness of this life and the happiness of future lives are temporary, and even the ultimate happiness of liberation is just liberation for the self from true suffering and the true cause of suffering. The most important thing of all is to bring sentient beings to the peerless happiness of full enlightenment. Among all the kinds of happiness that we can bring other sentient beings, the most important is that of full enlightenment, the state that ceases all faults of the mind and perfects all realizations. This state of full enlightenment is complete peace of mind. Until we've achieved full enlightenment, we've neither gained complete peace of mind nor fully developed our mind's capacity to understand all existence.

The question is, "How can I benefit other sentient beings?" Other sentient beings don't want to receive harm from us. Just like us, every other sentient being wants happiness and doesn't want suffering. Not even the slightest discomfort in a dream! They only want happiness, and we need to offer them happiness. We are responsible for pacifying the sufferings of all sentient beings and for obtaining their happiness and there are these four different levels of happiness that we can bring them. While we need to bring them the benefit of the comfort and happiness of this life, it's more important that we bring them the great benefit of long-term happiness, the happiness of future lives. More important than long-term happiness, we need to bring them ultimate happiness - the complete end of all suffering and its causes. And the greatest benefit of all that we need to offer sentient beings, what they're missing and what they really need, is the peerless happiness of full enlightenment. This state of complete peace of mind is the greatest benefit we can bring sentient beings.

You will be able to collect a free copy of How Things Exist at Jamyang's entrance. You can also read the book online at the
LYWA's website.

Geshe Tashi's House Appeal Update by Amelia Adrian
This is an update of the appeal launched last Summer to raise money to help Geshe-la buy a flat.

GT Firstly, may we thank all those who have donated, pledged and expressed an interest in the appeal. Your generosity is genuinely inspiring. To date, donations received are £24,785.46, and a further £9,200 has been pledged. Combined total of pledges and donations: £33,985.46

Initially we intended to run the appeal until Spring 2008.  Now that Spring is already here, we have had discussions with Geshe-la about his plans for purchasing a flat and he feels, as do we, that due to the current uncertain housing market it would be prudent to wait and see what happens to the market before rushing in and buying. Of course this is impossible to predict but most housing market analysts agree the market looks like it is going to drop.  We could then effectively get more for our money.

We are therefore proposing to keep the appeal open until Spring 2009 and look to buy in Spring/Summer 2009.  This will also give us the opportunity to raise more money.  It seems our original aim of raising £300 000 was extremely ambitious.  We are therefore looking at the option of putting down as large a deposit as possible and then raising the remainder through a mortgage.  It seems a price in the region of £200 000 is more realistic.

Several people have suggested that smaller monthly contributions are more viable for some people than a larger one-off donation.  We are therefore organising the appeal so that people may either donate in smaller ongoing monthly amounts, or pledge a monthly contribution to Geshe-la's mortgage when it starts next year.

WAYS TO HELP

1. One-off donation
2. One-off pledges
3. Monthly donations (to start and end when you wish)
4. Monthly pledges (to start concurrently with Geshe-la's mortgage in Spring/Summer 2009, and end when you wish)

His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teachings in UK

Alice Hunter, one of the many Jamyang students who made it to Nottingham to attend His Holiness teachings, shares a little of this wonderful experience. Photos by Mark Gatterand Michel Henry .

HHDLOver 5,000 visitors each day and an estimated number of some 12,000 people overall packed Nottingham Arena during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, to listen to one of our greatest living Buddhist teachers, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

This was His Holiness' first visit to the UK since 2004 and involved over two years of planning and preparation by Dharma Network. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for Jamyang's students to meet and learn from this most profound spiritual leader.

The talks began with a series of sessions based on the theme 'Bringing Meaning to Our Lives', along with an additional Sunday afternoon discussion entitled, 'Caring for our World' which was hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby.

The following day, His Holiness moved onto three days of talks on the topic 'Investigating the Nature of Reality', where he analysed Je Tsongkhapa's text 'Praise to the Buddha for His Discourses on Dependent Origination.'

During the questions and answers which concluded each afternoon lecture, and when asked about the difficult concepts under discussion, His Holiness joked, "I was asked to teach a difficult text and so the explanation itself would, of course, also be difficult - but please blame Nagarjuna or the Buddha and not me!"

Although the wind and rain delayed the opening of the Big Top on Bank Holiday Monday, the weather did not dampen the spirits, and once up and running, the marquee provided a great community area to chat over lunch and of course, indulge in a little retail therapy, courtesy of the many Tibetan stallholders, displaying a plethora of authentic goods and handicrafts. Jamyang also had a stall where the programme and different courses were advertised.

Three evening sessions were provided which offered practical insight into living Buddhism. The first of these was 'Introduction to Buddhism', where Geshe Tashi and 3 other Buddhist teachers from different traditions shared their experiences in panel format. The second evening was guided by Sogyal Rinpoche and focused on The Heart Essence of the Teaching of the Buddha. The lighthearted nature and wonderful sense of humour of this great teacher rejuvenated those of us, who by our own admission, were beginning to feel just a little tired by 6pm! The third evening session was led by Ringu Tulku Rinpoche and provided a preparation for the Vajrasattva initiation the following morning. The heartfelt compassion of both speakers was an excellent grounding after the more conceptual topics discussed during the day and enabled us to better link together the practical aspects of Buddhism with the conceptual and theistic.

A beautifully dressed stage, rich in red and saffron colours provided a visually striking setting for the initiation, which represented the culmination of His Holiness' teachings and was a profoundly moving experience.
HHDL
At the close of the event, which was hailed as a huge success, Dharma Network reported that ticket prices this year were even lower than they were four years ago, which is surely an achievement in itself! As the network is a not for profit organisation, the estimated proceeds of £35,000 will go towards helping those affected by the earthquake in China, cyclone relief work in Burma and the Tibet House Trust in the UK.

After five days of teachings, the community atmosphere in the arena was so powerful, that one had the sense of being with one's own family. Just before leaving the stage to great applause, His Holiness made one request. Which was simply that we practise in our daily lives as much as possible.

Such is the warmth, humility and compassion of His Holiness, who describes himself as a 'simple Buddhist monk', that it is difficult to find words to express just how much he shall be missed. We are already looking forward to his return.

A big THANK YOU for everyone who helped at His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teachings in Nottingham

We would like to sincerely thank all those Jamyang people who volunteered at HHDL's teachings in Nottingham, giving their time and companionship. You were an unbelievably big help, especially from the point of view of the organisers. Bodhisattvas emanated! Tony (the electrician from the Pure Lands) and John and Cynthia (who brought up the Buddha statue and ritual implements for the initiation). Thank you so much. They were just a fab five days, weren't they? Also huge thanks to those who designed and staffed the Jamyang London stall, especially John Adrian.

Offering of the Guhyasamaja Thangka to His Holiness

In 2006 Geshe Namgyal Wangchen (the previous teacher at JBC London) very kindly helpedHHDLthe members of JBC London Guhyasamaja Practice Group to commission a large thangka (painted area 5ft by 4ft) to remove obstacles to the visit of HHDL in 2008. Geshe Wangchen placed the commission with an artist in Dharamsala, trained at Norbulingkha. In 2007 the thangka arrived in the UK and has since been housed in JBC London. The thangka shows the main deity Akshobyavajra  of the Guhyasamaja tantric practice with Tsongkhapa, Marpa and Go Lotsawa above (the guru lineage) and below, Palden Lhamo, Vighnantakrt and Dorje Drakden (the protectors). In Nottingham it was given to HHDL and it will accompany him back to Dharamsala. Thank you to all the practice group members who made this possible. The teachings went very well. His Holiness also commented that he was very pleased with the way Jamyang London approaches Tantric practice, not just requesting initiations but also commentary on the practice and then organising regular practice groups for people to deepen their understanding.

P.S. If you have the initiation, and are thinking of starting to work with tantric style practice, why not come along to the practice group? It usually takes place one Sunday a month.

Close encounter with HHDL

Anil Sharma, our hard working office manager, and Esther Garibay, our spiritual programme coordinator, represented Jamyang at the audience His Holiness gave to representatives from the Signatory Groups and members of Dharma Network. Anil Sharma shares, "This comment from HHDL is not to be taken as verbatim, but what I remember him saying is that the survival of the Tibetan Culture and the survival of the Buddha Dharma are closely connected".

Esther Garibay remembers, "His Holiness spoke about the importance of caring for our world. He was very happy to know some dharma centres are actively involved in ecological projects, for example recycling, saving energy, etc. He mentioned that although the Buddha never spoke about ecology, he was born near a tree and achieved paranirvana under a tree, so he was very close to nature."

At the end of the teachings, Kayode Ajayi, nurse and energetic and fun volunteer, offered a white ceremonial scarf to HHDL on behalf of the students of Jamyang Buddhist Centre. "I was in awe, that's all I can say. And the next day I felt very renounced", shares Kayode. Personally, I have never seen him looking so smart (or so blissed out).

Support His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet
Tibet Flag "The purpose of doing demonstrations is to fulfill the Guru His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Holy wishes. This Guru Yoga practice is the path to enlightenment for the benefit of sentient beings. It is also important to repay the kindness of the Tibetan people, who have preserved the complete Buddha Dharma, not only Vajrayana but the whole path. They have preserved all the teachings for a long time. Due to this, we non-Tibetans are able to receive the complete teachings, enjoy, and make our lives meaningful.

Now that their need is most urgent we need to be aware of how we can help. It is very important. This is what you would do if you are a sensible person, a thoughtful, intelligent person.

I have sent a message to His Holiness the Dalai Lama explaining what we will do and also requesting what prayers we should do for the achievement of success.

With much love and prayer,

Lama Zopa"

Vajrasattva Practice weekend in July and retreat in December!
Vajrasattva
Don't miss this opportunity to put into practice what you have learnt during Geshe Tashi's explanation of this powerful purification practice. Though particularly relevant to those of you who took the initiation from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, you don't need to have either attended Geshe Tashi's classes or received the initiation to do this weekend.

We will also have a retreat on this practice towards the end of the year.
Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin's visit in October-
We are extremely fortunate to be able to host Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin once more at Jamyang London in the Autumn. Rinpoche will be visiting us froKRm the 18th of September to the 12th of October.

The teachings we have requested are:

*Lam Rim teachings on Atisha's 7 Point Mind Training
*Teachings on the 108 Verses in Praise of Great Compassion
*Teachings on the Po Praise to Chenresik
* An Initiation into Jigje Pawo Chigpa, with commentary on the sadhana

We will keep you informed about the teaching schedule, but please take note and keep those dates free in your diary.
The Directors Column-
 Dear Friends,

SallyIt's now three months since I began work at Jamyang, and the time has passed "just like a flash of lightning"!

My first wish here, is to offer a heartfelt thank you to Geshe Tashi,  all the staff, students, volunteers, Board Members, "Friends" (members) and everyone associated with Jamyang and Courthouse Community Centre activities.  This is a wonderful thriving Centre, accomplishing a huge number of activities and ways to benefit beings - I feel so fortunate to be a part of this worthwhile activity and to serve at one of Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Centres.

For those of you who took the Vajrasattva Empowerment with His Holiness, I strongly urge you to follow this up by attending the Vajrasattva Practice Weekend here at Jamyang, led by Geshe Tashi on 5th-6th July (see ad for this elsewhere in this Gentle Voice).  Geshe Tashi's explanation of the Vajrasattva practice prior to the empowerment in Nottingham was extremely helpful and clear (available via Talking Buddhism), and Geshe Tashi's practice weekend will help us to deepen our practice even further.

The start of 2008 has not been a good one for Jamyang financially.  So if you are not already a "Friend" of Jamyang, I'd like to gently invite you to join up, you can read more about the membership here. "Friends" are those who commit to offering a set sum of money monthly, to help cover Jamyang's expenses.  It's a meaningful way to benefit the Centre, which is very dependent on financial help from friends and students.

We are all excited to be hosting a showing of "The Unwinking Gaze", a documentary about His Holiness, recently released, which will be followed by a Question & Answer session with Joshua Dugdale, the producer.  Please join us for the documentary, delicious food, yummy drinks and excellent company. This will be a much needed fundraising event for Jamyang, so come and let those ££ slip out of your hands while you thoroughly enjoy yourself!

And lastly, watch this space - Jamyang's Café will be re-opening soon!

With much love,
Sally

The Unwinking Gaze comes to Jamyang - save the date in your calendar

The Unwinking Gaze comes to Jamyang
Thursday the 10th of July @7.30pm
http://www.unwinkinggaze.com/

The Unwinking Gaze offers a unique, behind-the-scenes insight into the recent working life of Tibet's would-be saviour and revered world icon, the Dalai Lama.

The Unwinking Gaze was filmed over a period of three years with exceptional access showing the daily agonies of the Tibetan leader as he tries to strike a balance between his Buddhist vows and the realpolitik needed to placate China. David and Goliath is played out in front of us as the world's emerging superpower and the Dalai Lama walk a tightrope over an issue of global importance.

HHDL

The Unwinking Gaze is not 3 years in the life of the Dalai Lama. It is his life's work in 3 years. This film takes you inside the titanic struggle of one of the great spiritual and political figures of our time, as he tries to lead his people to a peaceful resolution with China.

Jamyang will be hosting the film and a Question & Answer session with Joshua Dugdale, the producer. We will also provide delicious food and drinks. More details will be out soon.

Being Vegetarian: something to reflect on this coming Saka Dawa day!
Dear friends and students of FPMT,

I have been asked about continuing with the pledges to Avoid Killing, and I think that this is good to do again now. We are now celebrating the Month of Saka Dawa (from June 3rd to July 2nd), a very special month to make the pledge, as the merit of virtuous activities during this month multiply by a million. Let's use this precious opportunity to accumulate merit, purifying our karma, and benefit so many sentient beings. This is also an easy way to do something for the long life of our Holy Gurus - His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, your own gurus. It is also very beneficial for prolonging our own lives, by not contributing to killing.I suggest that during the holy month of Saka Dawa (Buddhas Enlightenment and Paranirvana) you can take one of the  following pledges:

BuddhaTo become vegetarian for this whole life

To become vegetarian for one year

To become vegetarian for the month of Saka Dawa ( June 1 - June 30)

To keep precepts for the whole month of Saka Dawa

To keep precepts on all special days of Buddha and all precept days for your whole life

Not to eat meat during all special days of Buddha (4 days in a year) for one year

We can also promise not to get angry during this month of Saka Dawa. It is most powerful to make this pledge on the day of Saka Dawa, whichis June 18th, 2008. Please use this link to make the pledge:http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=lmdgf7f48ovh55w439018

Once you have submitted the pledge, feel very strongly that you havemade this promise in the presence of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvasand rejoice at the merit created. Your sincere motivation will makethis pledge very powerful. Please dedicate all the merit accumulated in this way as follows:*to the long life of HHDL, LZR, LOR, and all your own gurus* to increase the teachings of the Buddha in general, and especially, the Mahayana teachings* to remove all the problems in all countries experiencing war, famine, violence of any kind* to increase peace in the world* to remove all obstacles to the return of HHDL to Tibet* for complete peace between Tibet and China I rejoice in your great merit and make prayers for the success of your practice.

With many prayers, Lama Lhundrup
