A Buddhist Monk - 04/04/88 - 40 mins During His Holiness eleven day visit to the UK he gave teachings in London, addressed the Global Conference on Human Survival in Oxford and met extensively with the media. This programme is a personal profile of His Holiness within the context of this visit and presents him as Buddhist teacher, exiled leader of the Tibetans and international spokesman for peace. Includes short interviews with politicians, western Buddhists, show business personalities and Christian monks and nuns.
004. The Buryat and Kalmyk Tour: July 1991 - 120 mins In July 1991 H.H. the Dalai Lama visited Buryat and Kalmyk for the first time ever and the ethnic Russian Republic of Aginski for the first time since Perestroika. The visit was timed to coincide with the revival of religion since the dissolution of the Communist regime and was an amazing and dramatic time. In each place His Holiness gave Chenrezig Initiation and simple teachings on the basics of Buddhism. Scenes of near hysteria and joy greeted his arrival and teachings. It was a significant historic visit at the end of a repressive era, and meant very much for the people of these areas. This programme is the edited highlights of the tour. directed by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam 005. In the Presence of Compassion: HHDL UK Visit 1993 Highlights of His Holiness 1993 UK Visit. Includes excerpts from a series of Buddhist teachings at Wembley, a visit to Samye Ling Tibetan Centre and His Holiness first trip to Wales where after a press conference he was invited to play croquet. His Holiness also hosted an interfaith evening, talked at the students union at Cambridge and spoke of the importance of non-violence at the Bahama Kumari Gandhi Foundation.
006.Peace A Goal of All Religions at Ampleforth Abbey - 26/06/84 - 60 mins During the 1984 British tour His Holiness gave this talk, stressing that peace must be achieved on the individual level if peace is to prevail in the world at large. Recognising the basic oneness of mankind is the real way to break down national and sectarian differences. Includes a brief meditation on developing compassion and concludes with questions and answers.
007. Peace of Mind : Peace in Action - at the Royal Albert Hall His Holiness reiterates his message of how peace in the world will be achieved by the development of peace in each persons heart. He speaks of how kindness, tolerance and concern for others can overcome even the most frustrating problems in this age of materialism such as economic inequality and global concerns.
008. The Path of Non-Violence During His Holiness visit to Sweden in 1988 he gave this public talk in Stockholm. He expounds on the importance of non-violence as a path towards world harmony, and how developing altruism in oneself makes us happier. 009. 011. The Gift of Peace: A Message for all Faiths: Glasgow - 28/06/84 - 75 mins This interfaith service was attended by people from Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Bahai and Buddhist faiths. His Holiness welcomed the coming together of different religions, especially with the shared goal of peace for humankind. He spoke of the importance of respecting the variety of paths as they reflect the diversity of personal and social needs. Includes a meditation on overcoming self-concern and developing an altruistic attitude.

The Wheel of Time: Kalachakra for World Peace at Rikon Switzerland, 01/07/85 A rich and colourful record of the 10 days of Kalachakra teachings and empowerments, including interviews, excerpts from the teachings and exclusive footage of the rituals involved in making the sand mandala together with dances of the tantric monks. 013. Compassion and Non-Violence: in Trondheim, Norway, 14/12/89 - 38 mins During his visit to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize His Holiness visited a number of venues and gave a number of talks. This particular lecture captures the spirit of the tour and His Holiness restates his message of how practising compassion and developing non-violent strategies in dealing with situations will lead to a happier world.

The Future of Tibet and its Culture: HHDL UK Visit 1991, at SOAS, 01/03/91 - 78mins In response to an invitation from the School of Oriental and African Studies during his UK 1984 visit His Holiness gave a public talk addressing issues that students would find of interest, focussing on the Tibetan cultural heritage and how Buddhism is relevant to democracy.

Secular Meditation, 01/01/95 - 50 mins In this excellent introduction to meditation His Holiness talks about how mental happiness is more enduring than physical and that to obtain mental happiness we must train or transform our mind by meditation. There are two main types; analytical and single pointed and His holiness gives a clear explanation on each, and their practical application in our daily lives. He points out that we are not caring enough about our mind as we focus too much on external objects. His Holiness also includes an explanation of compassion and how meditating on this brings happiness and improves our mental ability for work, etc. Meditation practised regularly can also improve tolerance and self confidence. He concludes by saying we must value our own traditions, discriminating between what is useful and what is not, and that a combination of ancient wisdom and modern technology is useful.

017. The Experience of Transition; at Lama Tsong Khapa Institute, Pomaia, Italy, 24/10/82 - 60 mins Three short interviews concerned with introducing Tibetan style Buddhism to the West. His Holiness answers questions on how Tibetan Buddhism may adapt and contribute to western societies, Dr. Adrian Feldman, from Australia, talks about establishing a monastic community in the West and offers advice for those considering ordination, and Elisabeth Drukier, a French Buddhist nun, describes setting up and directing the FPMTs French centre, Vajra Yogini Institute. 018. Death and the Transference of Consciousness: Ven. Lama Thubten Yeshe at St John Smith Square, London, 18/09/82 - 60 mins This was the first programme recorded by Meridian Trust. Ven. Lama Yeshes talk is an excellent introduction to the subject of death for the general viewer as well as for students of Buddhism. He explains with clarity and humour the Buddhist view of death and the path consciousness follows as it moves from one lifetime to the next. Picture quality is fair, sound is good.

020. The Cremation of Lama Thubten Yeshe at Vajrapani Institute, Boulder Creek, California, 01/02/84 - 120 mins Having accomplished his work in this lifetime, after signs of a short illness Ven. Lama Thubten Yeshe passed away in California on February 8th 1984, as the sun dawned on the first day of the Tibetan new year. His heart-son disciple, Ven. Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, was with him and as the news spread people arrived from all over the world. Ven. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was invited to perform the cremation ritual at Vajrapani Institute, assisted by Geshe Sopa and Lama Yeshes brother. A cremation stupa was built and Lama Yeshe was accorded the full ritual honours of an accomplished Vajrayana master. made by members of Vajrapani Institute

The Meaning of Human Life and Patience: Ven.Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche at Conway Hall, London, 16/07/95 - 195 mins Lama Zopa covers several subjects in this public talk, which was given between various teachings and initiations over a week. At times Rinpoche is entertaining and humorous, at others he gives profound Buddhist teachings at quite a deep level, reflecting the fact his audience included both people new to these teachings and more experienced practitioners. Lama Zopas compassion and desire to give practical advice on how to live our lives well and with a minimum of suffering lies behind all that he says.

Tsenzab Serkong Rinpoche at Caxton Hall, London, 06/10/82 - 60 mins A concise traditional introduction to the practice of Buddhism from the late Assistant Tutor and debate partner to H.H. the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche begins with the four thoughts that turn the mind towards spiritual practice: the precious opportunity of a human birth, actions and their results, death and impermanence and the suffering nature of cyclic existence. Realising these leads to the determination to be free from cyclic existence - the mind of renunciation - and developing the resolve to activate the mind of enlightenment - bodhicitta - on the basis of love, compassion and a kind heart.

The 37 Practises of a Bodhisattva, His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Rikon Switzerland, 01/07/85 - 300 mins In preparation for giving the Kalachakra Initiation H.H. the Dalai Lama gave a three day teaching on this classic 12th century verse text by Thogme Zangpo. This is one of His Holiness favourite texts on the Mahayana path of the Bodhisattva, the individual who acts out of wisdom and compassionate awareness to become enlightened in order to help all others on the path to liberation. 032. The Nature of Mind: Ven. Kalu Rinpoche in London - 45 mins Ven. Kalu Rinpoche gives a clear teaching on the Nature of Mind. He discusses how the subtle level of the mind carries on to other lives until we attain enlightenment, thus it is important to understand, control and develop the mind. We exist relying on body, speech and mind, but without mind the other two are powerless, thus mind is easily the most important. It is through systematic practice of Buddha Dharma that we train the mind, and this precious human life is a wonderful opportunity to study and practise Dharma and learn to understand and train our minds.
033. The Three Principal Aspects of the Path: Ven. Lama Yeshe, 01/10/82 - 168 mins The three principal aspects of the path to enlightenment are renunciation, bodhichitta and right view. Lama Yeshe explains how renunciation is an inner experience which frees us from suffering and can be enjoyed by lay practitioners as well as monastics. Bodhichitta is the attitude of dedication to the welfare of all sentient beings, a reversal of our usual self-cherishing. Lama Yeshe then talks about the wisdom of emptiness, the right view of reality. He explains how renunciation and bodhichitta are not enough to cut the root of suffering, only wisdom can achieve this. By understanding how our conventional mind projects our own self-image we can begin to realise emptiness. The teaching ends with questions and answers, and includes a meditation for the long life and good health of H.H. the Dalai Lama in the middle. Lama Yeshe at Vajra Yogini Institute, France, 18/10/82 - 105 mins These 2 lectures were preparatory teachings for a tantric empowerment given by H. H. the Dalai Lama the following day. They introduce the disciple to the principal features of Mahayana practice so that the initiation into tantra has a proper foundation. Lama Yeshe follows Je Tzong Khapas teaching of this, three principal aspects of the spiritual path, namely the determination to achieve liberation from suffering, activating the altruistic attitude of the awakening mind, and cultivating perfect awareness of reality in the profound view of emptiness.

He points out that if we regard practising meditation as just another thing to do in an already busy life we are missing the point; much better to realise that meditation is a rest from everyday responsibilities and a chance to look at how we are living our lives. Ven. Sumedho also speaks about the value of integrating practice into our lives, that we do not have to regard it as something outside of our everyday life, but as a wonderful part of it.

042. Tibet In India - 110 mins An atmospheric and hauntingly beautiful two part film shot during the inauguration of the new main monastery of the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Jangchub Ling, near Dehra Dun in northern India, contains a school for tulkus and the film includes an interview with one young tulku whose favourite pastimes are football and prayers. H.H. the Dalai Lama leads most of the ceremonies and there are many other high lamas participating. Includes some rare lama dances, some of which are only performed once every twelve years and historical footage giving a context to the Tibetan situation in exile.
043. The Reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche, 01/12/91- 62 mins First broadcast on BBC Everyman. This is a fascinating story of a monks search for his dead master and the eventual discovery of a young boy who was recognised to be the new incarnation. This beautiful film is an inspired study of Tibetan Buddhist belief, full of laughter, ritual and prayer intercut with the practical realities of everyday life. The culmination of the search is the much celebrated arrival of the new Rinpoche at his monastery in South India.
044. My Life East and West: Ven. Geshe Lhundrup Sopa interviewed by Geoff Jukes, 29/06/84 - 60 mins Ven. Geshe Sopa, living in America since the mid 1960s, is a professor at Wisconsin University, Madison where he has established a department of Tibetan and Buddhist studies. The co-author of a number of books and translations of texts on Buddhist philosophy, he is renowned for his deep understanding of the Madhyamika, or Middle Way, view of reality. In this interview he answers questions concerning his early training in Tibet and the changes he has seen take place as Buddhism comes to the West.
045. Daily Life in A Tibetan Monastery - 30 mins This film is an intimate portrayal of the everyday life in a Bonpo monastery situated in the Himalayan foothills of Northern India. It shows a unique picture of the customs and rituals of Bon, the pre-Buddhist shamanistic religion of Tibet, and is an interesting introduction to this lesser known aspect of Tibetan culture.
046. Two Buddhist Nunneries - 30 mins Nunneries were an inherent part of Tibetan culture, but since the Chinese occupation of Tibet and suppression of religion they have almost died out. This programme visits the only two existing in exile in the eighties; at Tilokpur where Tilopa meditated and Dharamsala, near H.H. the Dalai Lamas residence, and examines their status, their importance in preserving this tradition and how benefactors can help them attain financial stability.
047. Palden Gyatso - 01/07/95 - 22 mins Palden Gyatso is a Tibetan monk who spent over thirty years in Tibetan prisons and labour camps for daring to cry out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Arrested while demonstrating for freedom for his country, he was systematically tortured and beaten during his imprisonment. In February 1995 Palden came to England, invited by Tibet Support Group UK, as part of a tour to tell the world what is happening in Tibet. This programme, drawn from a press conference and other events, captures the incredible courage of Palden and shows how the desire to help his fellow Tibetans kept him alive during horrific conditions. Paldens story gives a human face to the suffering in Tibet.

Western Buddhist Teachers Conference with H.H. the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala/India, 11/03/93 - 50 mins In March 1993 a group of teachers representing different traditions from several countries met with H.H. the Dalai Lama for a four day conference concerning the transmission and development of Dharma in the west. During his visit to England in May 1999 His Holiness the Dalai Lama was invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury to give the 10th Interfaith Lecture at the Lambeth Palace. H.H. the Dalai Lama spoke about world peace as something which cannot be enforced by law but will only come about when individuals recognise basic human values such as compassion, forgiveness and tolerance. He explained that religious institutions have a great role to play by promoting these qualities to people both with and without religious faith.
