How To Read Tibetan (for beginners)
Mondays 6.00pm - 7.30pm
From the 1st September until the 8th of December
suggested donation  £5 per class or £65 for 15 weeks ( £10 discount)

Tibetan is a complex but wonderful language. As a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner it is useful to know. Many words have crept into our language: Rinpoche, Gelug, gompa, Tulku, lama, Dewachen… It is nice to know what these terms and many others actually mean. Every language always conveys within it the way people think, feel, and see the world.

This course is aimed at complete beginners. We will learn to read the Tibetan U-chen script based on scriptural ("classical") Tibetan. The vocabulary covered will relate to Buddhist terminology.

Based on past experience, this class will be enjoyable and fun - but also hard work. Please come prepared to attend every week and to invest a substantial amount of time into doing homework in-between classes. It's worth it!

This class is limited to 12 places to enable everyone to practice what has been studied so please commit to the whole course.

This is a fundraising initiative: 70% of the proceeds go the Dolma Education Fund, Geshe Tashi's charity for the education of Tibetan children. For more details, please see the Dolma Education Fund leaflet at reception. The other 30% go to Jamyang Buddhist Centre.

About the teacher: Kristina has been studying Tibetan on and off in London, Sera monastery in South India and at the Shedra in Kathmandu, Nepal over the last ten years.  She teaches German language to adults as her full-time job.

This course is aimed at students who can already read Tibetan but would now like to acquire a better understanding of what they are reading. We will go through a Dharma text (to be agreed between teacher and students - something relevant to everyone), read it to get reading and pronunciation practice and work on translating it - word for word, line by line. We will cover grammar and vocabulary as it arises in the text. Please commit to regular attendance and to doing homework every week (i.e. going over the grammar and vocab covered in class).

This class is limited to 8 places to enable everyone to practice reading and translating, so please commit to the whole course.
